Abstract

The effective means of utilizing lime to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Serial dilution of concentrated lime was made, 1ml of the concentrated lime was cultured on Nutrient agar, Eosin methylene blue agar, and MacConkey agar. It was incubated for 37^C for 48hrs. The isolated pure culture of E. coli, S. aureus, and S. typhi was plated on media, these organisms
were isolated from the various sample. E. coli from untreated water, S. typhi from ice cream, and S. aureus from powdered milk. The isolates were tested biochemically and confirmed to be positive. These three organisms were cultured individually with Nutrient agar + lime, Eosin methylene + lime and MacConkey agar + lime. Results of this show no growth of organisms on the respective agar with lime and one can conclude the potential of lime which shows it possesses some antimicrobial activities that can inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria thereby reducing and preventing the level of foodborne bacterial diseases.
